Quick tips for troubleshooting a slow PC 1. First try these simple techniques:
2.Try a thorough virus scan. There is a virus around which will not be detected unless you perform a thorough virus scan, they can affect the processor speed and any applications that you may run. 3. Check for Overheating. Once you have checked that the system is virus free you can check for overheating. Make sure the room where you store the computer has a temperature less than 78 degrees. If the system that you have uses a Intel based processor then it is likely that the system will slow down as its heat increases therefore it is vital to provide as much cooling as possible. Check that all the cooling fans are working, if there is an excessive noise being produced from a fan then it may need to be cleaned or replaced. Intel now design their processors to slow down as the temperature increases. They do this to ensure that no damage will be done to the chip if it overheats. You can perform a check on the processor to test the temperature by turning the machine off and using a temperature multi-meter to see how hot the processor is. Be sure to earth yourself using a grounding strap to avoid static damage to the processor. Different Processors will run at different temperatures but normally the working temperature will be less than 110 degrees. If your temperature reading is above this then check the machine's fans and check they are operating properly. If there is an excessive build up of dust then clean using an air can as necessary. If you have a top spec PC and processor then it might be worth investing in a processor water-cooling system. As daft as this may seem you can now purchase the kits and they are designed to be very reliable. They will give a constant cooling effect on the processor and allow your processor to run more efficiently. 4. Check for Compatibility If your system is running Windows 9x you can check to make sure the Hard Disk drive isn’t running in MS-DOS compatibility mode. If the hard disc is in this mode then the computer will run much slower. To check this, open the Device Manager, right-click on the hard disk in question, and select the Properties command from the menu. This will display the drive's properties sheet. You can use the properties sheet to determine the driver being used and the driver’s mode. 5. Compress Disk Many people find that there is a significant loss in performance when the disk is compressed. You can check a disk’s compression by right clicking on the disk in My Computer and selecting the Properties command from the resulting menu to view the drive’s properties. |
